What is Professional Coaching?
Professional coaching is distinct from other supporting professions such as mentoring, teaching, councelling, and consulting in that coaches do not provide answers or give advice. Instead of being subject-matter experts, a coach's expertise lays in the 'art of coaching'.
Coaches ask powerful questions and listens closely to help their clients explore, discovern and find their own answers and solutions. In this way, a competent coach can coach anyone, including individuals and teams working in fields or experiencing challenges of which the coach has little or no prior knowledge or experience.
Evidence of the value and powerful impact of this somewhat counter-intuitive approach can be seen in the fact that professional coaching is flourishing worldwide as growing numbers of individuals and organisations across the globe experience the positive results of coaching in their personal and professional lives.

Results of recent surveys by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and Sherpa Coaching reveal some interesting facts about this fast-growing industry:
- By early 2020, there were about 71,000 coach practitioners around the globe - an increase of 33% since 2015. This number continues to grow.
- Over the same period, the number of managers/leaders using coaching skills is estimated to have risen by almost half (+46%).
- 70% of global coach practitioners are women, while women also account for 68% of managers/leaders who use coaching skills.
- Generation X (born between 1965-1981) account for about 51% of coach practitioners , followed by Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) at 38% and Millennials (born 1982-1996) at 9%.
- Generation X also account for the majority (61%) of managers/ leaders using coaching skills. The remainder are equally split between Millennials and Baby Boomers.
- The typical coaching client (37%) is between 35 and 44 years old while a little under one in three clients (30%) are in the 45–54 age range and around one in four (24%) are under 35 years of age.
- The total global revenue from coaching was US $2.849 billion in 2019 - an increase of 21% since 2015.
- 68% of professional coaches agree that the demand for coaching will continue to increase in future, and that the Covid Pandemic will no doubt exelerate the growth of the coaching industry even more.
- An increasing number of individuals and organisations who receive/ use coaching, expect their coaches to be professionally trained and certified/ credentialed (85% compared to 72% in 2015).
